TUESDAY NIGHTS

Tuesday evening club sessions down at St Catherine’s are here again. It has been decided by the committee to charge for these coaching sessions. If you have your own gear the charge is just £2 and £5 if you don’t. For that token fee, you will be able to join a session with one of the club coaches.
Anyone who wishes to join a Tuesday night session should be at the club house by 6.15 pm at the latest to sign up for the session.
Prepaid courses, such as the Paddlepower course for juniors being run by Sarah Clark, are unaffected by the changes. There will be no extra charge for those on Sarah’s course.

Mick Cullinane has agreed to be co-ordinator for Tuesday night sessions. Please see him if you have any questions

THURSDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING SESIONS?

We are hoping to be able to run coach-led Thursday evening paddles as normal through the Spring and Summer. Details of paddles will be available by phoning the club answerphone on 287616.

Unfortunately, there may not be enough coaches to run organised Sunday morning paddles. Therefore, over the summer members are advised to organise their own paddles. It is, of course, always worth checking the answerphone just in case.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SESSIONS

There are currently no Wednesday night sessions organised. If the situation changes, information will be posted in the newsletter.

ARE YOU THE JAMIE OLIVER OF THE TRANGIA WORLD?

Have you ever cooked up a treat around the camp fire with just one pot. If you have, please email Paul Perchard quick with your top recipes. Paul is running his famous one-pot cookery course at the Symposium and is looking for a few fresh ideas. He intends to prepare a booklet of meal suggestions for the workshop. Please email any ideas to Paul.

SYMPOSIUM GOES TO THE SOUTH SEAS

Mike Devlin, the BCU’s director of coaching, will give the keynote speech at the Symposium. He is going to talk about his paddling experience in the south seas, around Georgia and Antarctica.
The meal on Saturday is going to be held at the Pomme D’Or hotel.

WEBSITE

After much hard work by Jason Ruellan, the new-look website is due to go live within days. It can be accessed at the old address. (www.jerseycanoeclub.co.uk)

ALLONS-Y À MORBIHAN

Anyone thinking of going to Morbihan on 2-5 May should let Kevin Mansell know as soon as possible as he needs to book the campsite. If you haven’t been before, it is an excellent weekend of paddling - and the campsite restaurant is pretty good too.

SURF COMPETITION

A surf competition is due to be held at La Port, St Ouen, on Tuesday 6 May. Anyone can enter and there will be a barbecue afterwards, so bring food and drink (and your barbecue). Anyone interested should register with Sarah Clark at least three days before.

COACHES NEEDED FOR SUNDAY SESSIONS.

The list of coaches is looking a little bare for Sunday sessions (..and there are Thursdays to think about as well soon). Anyone who can sign up for a few dates should please contact Andy Sibcy as soon as possible.

COMMITTEE AGREES NEW ASSISTED COACH FUNDING SCHEME

Members will soon be entitled to claim back the cost of becoming a coach from the club.
At its last meeting, the committee gave its support to a new assisted coaching scheme.
A framework setting out how it will work in principle has been agreed, with a few details still to be sorted out.
In essence, coaches will be able to claim back the cost of coach training and assessment, and certain prerequisites for those courses (eg first aid certificates and canoe safety test), by running or helping lead club sessions.
Aspiring coaches will have to pay for their training upfront and can then claim back the money per session run.
It was decided that this was a failsafe way of making sure that all parties benefitted, with the club not running the risk of paying for someone’s training for them to walk away and not give anything back.
A letter is being drafted that will explain the scheme in more detail.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a coach and would like to take advantage of the scheme should contact Chantel Quaeck as soon as possible.

COULD YOU BE THE CLUB’S NEW HEAD OF COACHING/CHIEF INSTRUCTOR?

It was agreed by the committee that a new post of Senior Club Coach should be created to co-ordinate coaching in the club. The post-holder’s remit is yet to be agreed and is open for discussion, but it was agreed that he or she should chair a vetting committee to decide who could be accepted onto the assisted coach training scheme. Anyone interested in the role should contact Chantel Quaeck.
