Surf

Jersey is lucky to have excellent conditions for surfing. The competition is open to all members so even if you’re a relative novice come along and have a go.  We’ll look after you.  There may well be some members of the Surf Kayak Club on hand to judge for us but if not you could also be called upon to judge.

It is held at Le Port (AA box), St Ouen’s Bay. This competition is held subject to there being any surf and / or swell of course!

Sprints

Held in the calmer waters alongside St Catherine's breakwater, competitors all use the same type of kayak, usually a Valley Avocet, and sprint on a course parallel to the breakwater. The length of the course is shorter for the younger competitors. The fastest wins. As long as you can paddle you can enter! This is traditionally held in summer and often followed by a barbecue and fun races for all the family.

Middle Distance

The middle distance race is open to all club members.  Although most people use sea kayaks, this is not compulsory.  If attempted in a plastic boats (GP boats), it’ll just take a little longer!!

The race starts at Green Island and finishes at St Catherine’s and takes around 1½ hours in a sea kayak.  You should be aware that some of the time you may find yourself alone and some way from the shore.

Long Distance

The long distance runs from St Helier Harbour (Fisherman’s Quay) to Greve de Lecq, via the east coast.  It is a demanding paddle.  Participants must have gained either the new 3 Star, the old 4 star (Sea Proficiency) qualification or equivalent experience.  It is about  17 miles of solo paddling!  Be prepared for an early morning start.
Expedition and emergency equipment must be carried. The event is done in sea kayaks.

Slalom

This event is great fun as a spectator sport but even more fun to participate in!!  Normally this would be held early morning.  This year we have decided to set this event in the evening to encourage more participants to take part.  There are no required qualifications to take part in this competition

The slalom course is set up just off the rocks by the club house.  Gates are suspended above the rising tide. You are required to paddle the course as fast as possible, trying not to hit any of the gates, which will incur time penalties. Some gates are “reverse” gates where you are required to paddles backwards through them. You get two runs through the course - your fastest time being counted.

This competition is usually paddled in plastic boats (GP boats) - but there’s nothing stopping anyone having a go in their sea kayak.  It has been done in the past at the Symposium!!
